Australian Citizenship

Obtaining Australian citizenship marks the concluding immigration stage of your migration journey.

It involves non-Australian citizens willingly becoming Australian citizens. By taking this step, individuals pledge their allegiance to Australia and its populace, gaining the right to protection and the ability to exercise their citizen rights and duties. Various pathways exist to become an Australian citizen, each with specific eligibility requirements. The most commonly used pathways are through conferral and descent.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the following criteria:

Conferral (PR or NZ citizens)

To be eligible for Australian citizenship, you must be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen at the time of application and when the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) makes a decision.

Descent

To be eligible for Australian citizenship by descent, you must have been born outside of Australia, and at least one of your parents must have been an Australian citizen at the time of your birth.
If your parent acquired Australian citizenship by descent or adoption outside the Hague Convention or a bilateral arrangement, they need to have spent a total of 2 years lawfully in Australia before you apply.

Conferral (child 15 years or younger)

Be 15 years old or younger and apply independently.
Reside with a responsible parent who is an Australian citizen and provides consent for your application.
Reside in Australia with a responsible parent who consents to your application, is a permanent resident, and meets the residence requirement, but chooses not to apply for Australian citizenship due to the risk of losing citizenship in another country.
Reside with a responsible parent who consents to your application, even if they are not an Australian citizen, but you can demonstrate significant hardship or disadvantage if you do not become a citizen.
Be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen both at the time of application and when the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) reviews the application.

Conferral (person born in Papua before 1975)

Provide proof of your birth in Papua prior to 16 September 1975.
Provide evidence that one of your parents was born in present-day Australia and was an Australian citizen when you were born.
Successfully pass the character assessment.

Adoption (child adopted by an Australian citizen)

Possess a valid adoption compliance certificate for adoption conducted under the Hague Convention or a bilateral arrangement.
Have at least one parent who is an Australian citizen.
If you are 15 years or younger, your adoptive parent must apply for citizenship on your behalf.

Requirements

You will need to provide the following as evidence in applying for Citizenship:

Provide three documents that collectively demonstrate:

Your original name, date of birth, and gender
A recent photograph of yourself
Your signature
Your current residential address
Evidence of any name changes you have undergone.

Family Relationships

Include the passport bio-data page for each family member.
Attach a high-quality passport-sized photograph of each family member.
Provide the translated birth certificate for each family member.
If you are married, include a translated copy of your marriage certificate.
If you are in a de facto relationship, submit evidence of:
Shared finances for at least six months (bank or credit card statements)
Living together for at least six months (lease agreement, correspondence at the same address)
Social connection for at least six months (messages exchanged between partners).
Obtain police clearance certificates from any country where you have resided for 12 months or more within the past 10 years.
