The Temporary Graduate Visa – Subclass 485 provides international students with an opportunity to work in Australia after completing their studies.

It is a crucial step for individuals seeking to gain work experience and potentially transition to permanent residency in Australia. This visa allows successful applicants to stay and work in Australia for up to four years, depending on their qualifications and chosen stream. The visa is divided into three streams: the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream, Post-Higher Education Work Stream, and Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream.

Eligibility

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

This stream is designed for international students who have studied in Australia and graduated with qualifications in demand. Key eligibility criteria include:

  • Age: Must be under 35 years of age.
  • Study Requirement: Must have met the Australian Study Requirement, completing at least two years of study in Australia.
  • Skills Assessment: Must have a provisional skills assessment in an eligible occupation.
  • English Proficiency: Must meet the required English language standards.
  • Health and Character: Applicants must have adequate health insurance and meet the character requirements.


Post-Higher Education Work Stream

This stream is for international students who have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree or higher from a CRICOS-registered Australian institution. Key requirements are:

  • Age: Applicants must be under 50 years of age exceptions for Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders and Masters (research) and Doctoral degree (Phd) must be under 50.
  • Qualification: Must have completed a degree or higher qualification from an Australian CRICOS-registered institution.
  • English Proficiency: Applicants must meet the English language requirements.
  • Health and Character: Adequate health insurance and police clearances are necessary.


Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream

This stream is designed for graduates who have studied in regional Australia. Key eligibility criteria include:

  • Age: Applicants must be under 35 years of age, with exceptions for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders (under 50).
  • Regional Study: Applicants must have completed their qualifications in a regional area.
  • Work Experience: The visa allows graduates to gain additional work experience in regional areas.

Additional Eligibility Criteria for Subclass 485

Effective July 1, 2024
  • Age: The maximum age for applying has been reduced to 35, with exceptions for certain qualifications or passport holders.
  • Financial Capacity: Applicants must demonstrate financial capacity, with a required amount of $29,710 for individuals and student guardians.
  • Genuine Student Requirement: Applicants must meet the new “Genuine Student” requirement, replacing the previous “GTE” (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement.
  • English Language Proficiency: Applicants must meet specific English language test requirements, with results valid for up to one year. Acceptable tests include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and others.
  • Health and Character Requirements: Applicants must meet health and character criteria, including providing police clearance certificates and proof of health insurance coverage.

Application Process

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the criteria for the appropriate subclass 485 stream.
  2. Review Visa Conditions: Check your current visa status and ensure no restrictions like “No further stay” apply.
  3. Graduate from a CRICOS-registered Course: Confirm that your course was registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
  4. Prepare Documents: Gather the required documents, including proof of qualifications, English proficiency, health insurance, and police clearances.
  5. Submit Application: Lodge your application through ImmiAccount or on paper using Form 1409.
  6. Wait for Visa Outcome: After submission, the Department of Home Affairs will assess your application and notify you of the decision.
