Eligibility at a glance
You must:
Hold residence: Been on a Resident Visa for at least five years
Physical presence:
Minimum 240 days in NZ each year, and
At least 1,350 days in total over five years
Language: Speak basic conversational English
Character: Of good character, with any required police certificates
Intent: Plan to live here permanently after grant
Exceptions & special cases
Early eligibility: If you already meet the day-count (240 × 5 years & 1,350 total), you may apply before the full period elapses.
Children under 16: No residence, language or character requirements if applying with a qualifying parent.
Children 14–15: Must live here indefinitely, intend to stay, speak English and prove good character.
Children 13 and under: Must live here indefinitely and intend to remain; no language or character checks apply.

– Born in NZ before 1 January 2006, or born here to a citizen or resident parent.By Descent
– Born overseas to a NZ citizen (not by descent).By Grant
– Held residence and met all eligibility criteria (the most common route).
Good character requirement
You must disclose any criminal convictions or charges—domestic or overseas.
Provide police certificates for any country in which you’ve lived while on a Resident Visa.
Applications may be declined if you have:A conviction in the last three years;
Served prison time in the last seven years;
Received a sentence of five years or more.
