Visitor Visa

The New Zealand Visitor Visa lets you stay temporarily for purposes such as tourism, family visits, business meetings or short-term study (up to three months).

You cannot work on this visa, and some nationalities require an NZeTA before travel.

Eligibility at a glance

You must:

  • Have a temporary purpose (tourism, visiting family/friends, business, or study up to three months)

  • Not work while in New Zealand

  • Demonstrate sufficient funds (yours or your sponsor’s)

  • Show genuine intentions to depart at visa expiry

  • Meet health and character requirements

  • Provide onward-travel evidence (ticket or funds)

    • Explain your reason for visiting.

    • Immigration NZ will review your travel history and personal circumstances.

  • Financial Support

    • Bank or credit-card statements, or pre-paid accommodation.

    • If sponsored: sponsor’s bank statements, employment details and accommodation proof.

  • Family Inclusion

    • You may include a spouse/partner and dependent children (under 20).

    • Provide marriage/civil-union and birth certificates.

  • Health & Character

    • Medical checks (X-ray/exam) only if requested.

    • Police certificates if you’ve spent 24+ months in NZ.

  • Onward Travel

    • Return ticket or evidence of funds to purchase one at trip’s end.

Special Visitor Visa types

  • Academic, entertainer or media visas

  • Businessperson visas

  • Long-term parent/grandparent visas (multiple-entry, up to six months per visit)

Conditions & validity

  • Maximum stay: 9 months in any 18-month period

  • Extensions: Up to a further 3 months (total 12 months in 24 months)

  • Re-entry rule: If you’ve already stayed 12 months, you must leave for 12 months before reapplying

  • Study: Up to 3 months (single continuous period; children can attend school for up to 3 months per year)

  • Work: Not permitted
